This course covers the theory of structural systems under different types of dynamic excitations. It aims to:
- Provide a deep understanding of the dynamic response and behavior of civil engineering structures
- Introduce and discuss the mathematical formulation of the equation of motion for discrete, including single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) and multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) systems, and continuous systems
- Analyze SDOF and MDOF systems under free and forced (harmonic, periodic, arbitrary, impulse, earthquake) vibrations
- Understand the modeling of damping and its effects on the response of SDOF and MDOF
- Describe and study shock and seismic response and design spectra of structures
- Investigate numerical methods used for determining the linear and nonlinear responses of structures
- Analyze and explain concepts of structural control strategies including tuned mass dampers (TMD) and base isolation
