The research project is led by Professor Cesar Pasten from the Department of Civil Engineering of the Universidad de Chile and the co-PIs are Professor Sergio Ruiz from the Department of Geophysics of the Universidad de Chile and Professor Rodrigo Astroza from the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences of the Universidad de los Andes. The four-year project will develop an unprecedented 3D structural model of the Santiago Basin at multiple scales and use numerical methods to predict its seismic behavior, accounting for the interaction of different materials, the nonlinear material behavior, the geometry of the Basin, and the seismic sources that can generate significant ground motion.
